There is one thing that a word of faith, and a flip of coin have in common: they are both used as a form of sortition. By definition, sortition is the action of selecting or determining something by the casting or drawing of lots. And by definition, coin flipping is the practice of throwing a coin in the air and checking which side is showing when it lands, in order to choose between two alternatives. And faith by definition, Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” So full faith is putting forth and exhausting fully all the activity in your power, into the faith substance in which you selected; and this was done by sorting the selected faith substance from the other faith substance alternatives that were made available to you, to determine the outcome that you hope to bring to pass. And as it is stated in scripture, you have to apply your faith to the substance you selected from your sorting in order to bring faith alive: James 2:17-18, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
OK, in all fairness to those of us who walk by faith, it’s not quite as easy to sort out faith alternatives as it is to sort out coin alternatives. The coin can only give you two choices to use to do your sorting. So on Sundays right before the NFL sorts out who will have the football first, it must only go through the preparation of checking to make sure that a coin, and the team captains make it to the field for the referee to make the toss. Then the away team captain usually calls it in the air, and wah-la, the path to bring to pass the football game can now begin. Boy, I can hear the Christian groan going out now, it’s no where that easy when it comes to sorting out faith to make the selection of the direction that we will be going forth with to bring to pass the things hope for. Nope, you can’t just flip up faith to sort out the agreed upon selection. You have to word up faith to sort out the agreed upon selection. When you have a word of faith, there will be faith substance alternatives brought before you to sort. For example, you want a new job, and there are many selections to chose from, but how do you sort through these selections in order to walk in the one that will bring to pass the thing or the great position that you hope for. One thing we know for sure, and that is you better do more than just flip for it. The way you sort through all of the selections is by “word” or in this case resume. Your resume or application is going to be the “word” used to sort out your word of faith options. If your word or resume speaks of one being a business executive, do not select a Physician position as the Head of the Emergency Room as one of you faith substance selections, and then get down on God because you did not receive any responses.
Let’s take an example that is not so forth coming, and not so clear to follow; so let’s say that your word of faith is to be a minister of the Lord Jesus. How do you begin to sort through you faith choices in order to move forward to bring to pass that which you hope for? And for the sake of finishing the example in the next few lines, let’s say that you are sure that you have heard the call from God on you to be a minister is where you should start. Well let’s sort: are you in a church now, not in a church at the moment, already in service working in the Body of Christ? Your current situation could be of many, so let me make it easy for you: look around you to see what is already there for you to do which has your word substance in it. Word matches substance of things hoped for: if already in a Church go share it with your leadership; if a letter was in your mailbox for bible school go get more info to check it out; if you find yourself always sharing scripture with people, keep an ear to listen for direction on your next step. There are options already in your space that you need to sort for a selection. When walking in a word of faith, it can produce around you what your next step will be from any activity. A friend may just say come with me to this special service at Church tonight. You should go sort to see if this is something that you can select faith substance. There may be direction for you there, and at the most, it allows God to see how you follow the substance given: did you go with the friend or not since it was substance that may match your word? Many people miss what God has for them because they are looking for what they think they know instead of fully sorting through all word matching substances alternatives that come their way to find the selection that will give them the thing hoped for that they do not know. And remember, you can’t flip faith, you must only match it to word: word is what sorts your alternatives, and make them become selections to walk in to bring to pass that which you hope for. Here is one of my key gems to walk by: select from the faith substance that matches up with your word of faith ” the faith substance in which you believe.” There are many faith substances that can bake the cake that you want, but do you believe that you can bake the cake that you want with that same substance? If you choose a faith substance from your sorting that you don’t believe in, even if the substance is true, you will not be able to bring it to pass that which you hope for because of your doubt and disbelief. Matthew 21:21, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.”
